I
can't believe Team USA actually arrived today. I've been anticipating this day
since I first met David Fried, Team USA's coach, at the NFL Flag Football World
Championship in Beijing two summers ago. 37 Americans arrived today as part of
Team USA's group, including 18 players and 19 parents and siblings. |

| Ito-san
(Judge) and I have been working nonstop for four months preparing for Team USA's
Goodwill Tour. Many other members of JFFF have been organizing football events
and dinners. |

| Judge
spent the whole Saturday before the arrival just buying tickets for the entire
group to travel to the various football events and to arrange reservations on
the shinkansen for each segment of the trip. Judge had a hard time finding trains
where he could reserve seats on the same train since it was such a large group,
but of course, he managed to do it. |
| ジャッジ伊藤は、teamUSAメンバー全員のために、今回のジャパンツアーの各地イベントに行くためのチケットの購入と、どの新幹線をどのように予約したらよいかで、一行が到着する直前の土曜日を、丸々費やしました。ジャッジ伊藤は、teamUSA一行がとても大人数だったので、一行全員の座席が予約できる列車を探すのに大変苦労していましたが、彼は何とかそれをやり遂げました。 |
| The
Japan welcoming party for Team USA consisted of Judge, Keiko Best, Hiroko Higuchi
and me. We arrived at the airport about an hour before the first group arrived
and rehearsed what we had to do. Things like going to the JR reservation office
for the Japan Rail passes, finding out if we can make reservations for the limousine
for the hotel, and finding out where the cell phone rental store is. |

USAの到着を歓迎するために待っていた日本側メンバーは、ジャッジ伊藤、Keiko Best（ジェイ・アール・ベスト夫人）、Hiroko Higuchi氏と、私でした。私たちは、一行の最初のグループが到着する1時間前に空港に到着して、一行を向かい入れるに当たっての準備をしておきました。Team
USAがすでに購入した「Japan Rail Pass」という、海外在住者のみの1週間フリ−パスのTicketについて、JR東日本のチケットセンターに行ったり、一行が宿泊するホテルまで行くリムジンバスの予約が可能かどうかを確かめたり、携帯電話レンタル店がどこにあるかを見つけに行ったりしました。 |
| We
found out how organized Team USA is when we met the first group to arrive (Team
USA came over on four different flights). Steven Silvers, one of the player's
parents, was in the first group and he had copies of all the passports for everyone
in the group. Judge and Hiroko Higuchi took Steven down to the JR office to get
the Japan Rail passes for everyone. Even though you're supposed to show your actual
passport to get a rail pass, Judge managed to sweet talk the JR employee into
using the copies to get the passes. It took an hour to get the passes and make
reservations on the shinkansen for Team USA's trip throughout Japan. |
| 私たちは、teamUSAの第1陣(teamUSAは、4つの飛行機に分乗して来日した)と会ったとき、TeamUSAがとても整然としていることに驚きました。最初のグループには、選手の両親のひとり、Steven

| Then
I took Steven down to get cell phones which didn't take long and Keiko helped
Steven exchange money for the whole group. Judge bought tickets for the limousine
service for all 37 people in the group which was risky since we weren't sure when
each group would clear customs. Then we put the first group, which consisted of
only three people, on the limousine to take them to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in
Ikebukuro. |
| 私は、携帯電話を手に入れるためにStevenを連れて行ったがそれほど時間はかからなかった。そしてKeikoは、Steven

| Since
we had already taken care of the Japan Rail passes and reservations, cell phones
and money with the first group, the rest of the groups were easy except that we
had a few problems. We waited for the second group of 14 people to clear customs.
It was going on an hour and fifteen minutes since their plane arrived and the
group hadn't appeared yet. The limousine bus was leaving at 4:25pm and it was
now 4:10pm. Judge was about to go change the limousine reservations when my phone
rang. Luckily, one of the parents had my number and called to let me know they
had exited customs at the other exit. We rushed to where they were waiting and
quickly accompanied them to the limousine bus. They made it with two minutes to
spare. Keiko accompanied them to the hotel. |

| The
third group of 13 was late. It was going on an hour and a half since their plane
arrived. David Fried, the coach was arriving with two other adults and 10 kids.
Having learned our lesson from the prior group, I went down to the other exit
in case they were there. On the way, I was stopped by the police and asked to
show my passport. I must have looked suspicious! Judge called me to tell me David's
group had cleared customs. They missed their limousine bus by one minute and had
to wait a half an hour for the next one. |

| The
last group to arrive was Mitch Grabois, the General Manager, his wife Lori, and
his two sons, Evan and Spencer, who play on the high school team. We all fit into
Judge's van and drove two hours to the hotel. |

| The
whole group waited for us to arrive before going to dinner. Sasada-san came to
the hotel to greet Team USA and he joined us for dinner. Keiko introduced him
to Team USA, and some of the players thought the "President" of Japan
came to greet them. Team USA's first meal in Japan wasn't very typical Japanese.
Judge, Sasada-san I took all the kids and David to Jonathan's and the adults went
with Keiko and Hiroko to an Italian restaurant. All the Americans were tired but
very excited to be in Japan. We survived day 1! |
| すでにホテルに向かっていたグループは、夕食のために今か今かと私たちの到着を待っていました。笹田さん（JFFF理事長）がTeam
USAに挨拶をするためにホテルに来て、夕食をともにしました。KeikoがTeamUSAに彼を紹介しました。笹田さんが日本フラッグフットボール連盟の理事長であるとわかると、何人かの選手が挨拶をしてきました。日本におけるteamUSAの最初の食事は、とても典型的な日本の食事ではありませんでした。ジャッジ伊藤さん、笹田さんと私は、子供たちみんなととデヴィッド・ヘッドコーチをジョナサンに連れて行きました。また、大人達は、KeikoとHirokoがイタリアンレストランに連れて行きました。teamUSAはとても疲れていましたが、日本にいることにとても興奮していました。

■滞在2日目/13 3月30日（金） 終日、箱根/鎌倉観光 |
Today
I accompanied Team USA on a sightseeing trip to Lake Ashi and Kamakura. Judge
and Keiko actually had to get some work in today so they couldn't come. We had
an English-speaking tour guide, but thank goodness one bilingual volunteer, Tomoko
Oshima, came along or they would have had to rely on my broken-Japanese to help
out in a pinch. |
| 今日は、TeamUSAは芦ノ湖と鎌倉への観光旅行の日で、私は同伴しました。ジャッジ伊藤とkeikoは、今日は仕事があり、来れませんでした。私たちの仲間には、英語を話す観光ガイドがいますが、そのうちの1人のボランティア通訳、Tomoko

Team USA's visit, Keiko recruited 15 bilingual volunteers to facilitate communication
between the Japanese and American players so that they can really get to know
each other. |

| We
were supposed to depart at 8am, but the group didn't get in the bus until 8:40am.
Rounding up 37 Americans first thing in the morning can be challenging! |

| It
was pouring rain, so Keiko and the tour guide had to discuss Plan B over the phone.
They decided to take a chance and stick with Plan A. Luckily as we got closer
to Lake Ashi, it cleared up. As we got closer to the lake, the tour guide announced
that we could see Mount Fuji. Everyone got excited and the Americans were frantically
getting out their camcorders and cameras. One of the parents, Gus, pleaded with
the bus driver to slow down to no avail. |

| The
Americans enjoyed the short boat ride. Then we split into two groups and the bilingual
volunteer helped all the kids order lunch at one restaurant and I joined the adults
at another. I tried to order for the adults, but ended up confusing the waitress.
When she finally brought the food to the table, she accidentally spilled soup
on Gary. She was very apologetic and Gary was good-humored about it. The Americans
were pleasantly surprised when they paid the bill that the waitress didn't charge
Gary for his meal. |

frequent question the kids asked was why Japanese wear masks. I told them to ask
the Japanese kids when they meet them tomorrow. |

| Next
stop was Kamakura. Team USA spent most of the time posing for pictures in front
of the Great Buddha. They also posed in front of the empty sake kegs stacked up
at the shrine. Then the adults had time for their favorite pastime, shopping!
We all walked down the street in front of the shrine that is lined with cherry
blossom trees. I don't know if Team USA knows how lucky they are to be visiting
when the trees are in full blossom. |

| We
arrived back at the hotel late. Keiko, Judge and Hiroko were there to help take
the group to dinner. Since tomorrow is the first football event, David wanted
the players to eat right away. We took them to the 8th floor of Metropolitan Plaza
since there are a bunch of restaurants to choose from. Unfortunately, most of
the places were crowded (it was Friday night) and we could only get four or five
people at a time into a restaurant. |

| Judge
ended up chaperoning five kids at the sushi restaurant. One of the kids asked
me why there isn't real sushi in Japan. When I asked him what he was talking about,
he said there are no California Rolls (avocado & crab rolls). I told him that
Japan has real sushi and that the sushi he eats in America is made just for American
tastes. Another kid said he liked sushi, but he doesn't like fish! Welcome to
Japan! |
| ジャッジ伊藤は、結局、5人の子供をすし屋に連れて行きました。子供のひとりは、本物の寿司がなぜ日本にないか、私に尋ねました。
私は彼が何のことを言っているのかと思ったら、彼は、日本のすし屋に、カリフォルニアロールス(アボカドとカニのロール巻き)が全くないと言うことでした。 私は、日本にあるのが本物の寿司で、君がアメリカで食べているる寿司は、アメリカ人の好みに合わせて作られたものだと言いました。別の子供は、寿司は好きだけど、魚は嫌いだと言いました!

| We finally got everyone
seated at one of five restaurants. After they all ate and went back to the hotel,
Judge, Keiko, Hiroko, Sasada-san and I decompressed over a tempura dinner. We
barely survived day 2! Tomorrow is the first football event, the real reason Team
USA is here! |

■滞在3日目/13 3月31日（土） 関東地区交流会 |
Today
was awesome! It was better than I dreamed. It was truly a cross-cultural friendship
event. The event was held at Senshu Daigaku and 130 Japanese kids participated
and a lot of parents came. Kano-san did a fantastic job of organizing the event.
The people from Senshu Daigaku were excellent hosts. We had five bilingual volunteers
on hand. Their first job was to make name tags for the over 200 people in attendance.
The American players and parents had name tags in katakana and the Japanese in
romanji. |
| 今日はすばらしい日でした。私が想像していたよりも良かったです。イベントは専修大学で開催され、130人もの日本の子供たちが参加し、また多くの家族も参加しました。叶さん（実行委員長）のイベントの仕切りは、とてもすばらしかった。専修大学の関係者はすばらしい招待者でした。5人の通訳ボランティアが私たちの周りに居合わせました。
彼らの最初の仕事は、出席する200人以上の人のために名札を作ることでした。アメリカ人の選手と両親はカタカナで、日本人はローマ字で名札を作りました。 |
| At
the beginning of the exchange lunch, the American players surprised everyone by
yelling "Domo arigato. Gambatte ikose!" David Fried gave a very emotional
speech about his dream to come to Japan and to make friendships here through football.
Everyone once in a while I would point out to Ishii-san some Japanese and American
kids talking or laughing together so he could take a picture. |
| 交流昼食会の最初に、TeamUSAの選手たちが"どうもありがとう"と大声で言ったので、皆を驚かせました。「ガンバッテ、イコウゼ」。David
Friedヘッドコーチは、日本に来て、フラッグフットボールを通して交流を結ぶために、彼の夢についての非常に情熱的ななスピーチをしました。 ときどき、石井さん（JFFF理事・総務委員長）が写真を撮りやすいように、何人かの日本の子供とアメリカの子供が一緒に話したり笑ったりしているところを教えました。 |
| David
said he wanted to play a lot of games while he was in Japan and Kano-san didn't
let him down. Team USA brought three teams, shogakusei, chugakusei and kokosei,
and I think each team played three games each. I stood by Team USA's assistant
coach, Gary, during the first shogakkusei game. Team USA had never played by the
Japanese shogakusei rules so it took the Americans some getting used to, but they
were good sports about it. In America shogakkusei games, the QB can't run and
the defense can't rush immediately while in Japan, they can. |
Davidヘッドコーチは、日本にいる間はたくさんの試合をしたいといいました。そし叶さんは彼を失望させませんでした。TeamUSAは、小学生チーム、中学生チーム、高校生チームの3つのチームを引き連れてきました。私はおのおののチームがそれぞれ3ゲームはできると思いました。私は小学生チームの第1試合が行われている間、TeamUSAのGaryアシスタントコーチのそばに立っていました。Team
USAは、アメリカ人も以前はこんな風にやっていたと思われるような日本の小学生ルールで、試合をしたことが無かったからです。でもそのルールは小学生にとってはとても合っているルールでした。アメリカの小学生の試合では、クォーターバックは走ることができないし、ディフェンスはすぐにラッシュすることはできませんが、日本ではそういったことができるのです。 |
For
the chugakusei and kokosei games, we found out a big difference in the style of
play is that the Americans will dive to pull the opponents flag which is not allowed
under Japanese rules. The Americans play under international rules which allow
diving for the opponent's flag. |
| 小学生と高校生の試合に関しては、プレーのスタイルに大きな違いがあることを見つけました。アメリカの選手が、日本のルールでは反則となる、飛び込んでフラッグを取っているのです。アメリカの選手は、飛び込んでフラッグを取ることが反則ではないインターナショナル・ルールでプレーしています。 |
| After
the games, Team USA held its first football clinic in Japan. All of the American
players were instructors and they had a lot of energy which they needed because
there were so many Japanese players attending the clinic. The Japanese kids were
great students and showed a lot of enthusiasm. The clinic was divided into one
hour of offensive drills and an hour for defense. They had some excellent drills
that I think every coach should incorporate into their practices. Team USA prepared
an instruction pamphlet for the clinic which you can get a Japanese translation
of by contacting the JFFF. |
| 試合終了後、
Team USAは、来日して初めてのフラッグフットボールのクリニックを開始しました。アメリカ人のプレーヤーは皆、インストラクターでした。そして、とても多くの日本人選手がクリニックに参加したので、診療所に通うとても多くの日本人のプレーヤーがいたので、彼らには、とても多くのパワーが必要でした。日本人の子供は、優秀な学生であり、熱心にクリニックに参加していました。クリニックは、オフェンスの練習のために1時間、ディフェンスの練習のために1時間設定されていました。彼らは、すべてのコーチたちが自身の練習に取り入れる価値があると思われるすばらしい練習法を提示しました。Team
USAは、クリニックのために指導法が書かれたパンフレットを用意していました。JFFFに連絡すればその和訳が手に入るはずです。 |
| The
clinic was cut a few minutes short by the threatening rain clouds. I talked to
David afterwards and he was grinning ear-to-ear. He thought the first football
event went extremely well and his players really enjoyed it because the Japanese
players really wanted to learn from them. |

| The
Senshu Daigaku football team started practicing towards the end of the clinic.
Team USA's players were amazed and impressed that Senshu's players were yelling
and making noise during their entire practice. They thought that was great and
showed a lot of team spirit. |
| 専修大学アメリカンフットボール部が、クリニックの横で練習を開始しました。TeamUSAの選手たちは、専修大学の選手が練習中ずっと、大声を上げたり鼓舞している姿を見て、驚いて、感動しました。

| What
a great day for football and what a great setting. It was a nice spring day and
the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. There had to be over a 100 Japanese players
who participated. It was fun seeing some kids from Kawasaki who attended our camp,
SCOA, last summer. |
| 最高のフットボール日和だった。会場も素晴らしかったし、暖かくて、桜も満開だった。参加してくれた日本の子供たちの数は100人を下らないはずだ。昨年SCOA（Sports
Camp of America）のキャンプに参加してくれた川崎の子供たちに会えたのも嬉しかった。 |
| The
event took place at the City of Kawasaki's hanami matsuri at Nippon Medical University.
The Americans really enjoyed walking around, seeing all the booths and trying
different foods. David Fried's mother, Susan, surprised everyone when she showed
up in a kimono during the opening speeches! (She rented the kimono from one of
the booths at the festival). |
| イベントは、日本医科大学で行われた川崎の丸子花見市との併催だった。チームＵＳＡも出店を見て廻ったり、色々な食べ物にトライしてみたり、と楽しんでいたようだ。デービッドコーチのお母さんのスーザンは、開会式の最中に突然着物で登場し、みな度肝を抜かれた！（お祭りの出店のどこかから着物を借りて着付けてもらったそうだ。） |
| Our
five year old son, Kai had a lot of fun with the American players today and yesterday
at Senshu. Since Kai attends a Japanese yochien, he hadn't spoken this much English
since he visited California in December! |
| 私の5歳の息子の海も、昨日の専修大学でのイベントに続き、今日もチームＵＳＡの選手たちと沢山遊んでもらい楽しかったようだ。海は普通の日本の幼稚園に通っているため、昨年12月にカリフォルニアに帰って以来、あまり英語を話していないのだ。 |
| Judge
Ito and I were persuaded to play with the American high school team for a couple
of sets of downs. I managed to throw a touchdown pass only because I threw it
really high knowing the American receivers can jump! Judge threw a pass for a
point after. |

football clinic went really well and we were lucky to have a special guest, Reggie
Robertson, who helped some of the kids during the quarterback drills. Reggie played
quarterback for the University of California at Berkeley Golden Bears and was
signed by the Oakland Raiders of the NFL and played in NFL Europe. He is now living
in Japan. |

| At
the end of the clinic, each Team USA player gave a Mo Steel t-shirt to the Japanese
player they thought did really well and gave a good effort during the games and
clinic. They probably gave out 20 t-shirts. (They did the same at Senshu Daiguku
the day before). They also gave all the kids pins and other omiyage from Miami.

friendship exchange dinner was held at a restaurant near the field. I think about
50 Japanese players and parents attended along with the Americans. The American
players sat with Japanese players and had a great time judging by the laughter
and noise. Kano-san did another excellent job of planning the City of Kawasaki
event. |
| 夜には、グランドの近くのレストランで交流ディナーが行われた。日本人は選手や大人も含めて50名程が、アメリカ人と一緒に参加してくれた。アメリカ人と日本人が同じテーブルに座り、ワイワイがやがやと盛り上がっていたから、みな楽しんでくれたのだと思う。川崎市での今回のイベントは叶さんの綿密な計画のおかげで成功裡に終わった。 |
| I
took the train back to the hotel with Team USA. After two days of football they
were tired but couldn't stop talking about what a great day it was and how nice
and friendly the Japanese players were. |

football today for Team USA. This was their "free day in Tokyo" and
they made the most of it. It was a very long and fun day full of adventure. I
think Team USA did more in one day in Tokyo than most tourists do in a week! |

今日はフットボールなしの日だった。「都内自由行動」の日だった今日一日を皆、存分に楽しんだようである。アドベンチャーが詰まった長い一日となった。普通の観光客が一週間かけて経験することを、チームＵＳＡは1日でしつくしてしまったんじゃないかと思う。 |
| Keiko
and I got up at 4 am so that we could meet Team USA at their hotel in Ikebukuro
by 5am. Then it was off to Tsukuji! It was bustling and with those little motorized
three-wheel fish-transport vehicles going every which way, downright scary (for
me at least!) at times. Keiko managed to talk to someone and got us into the fish
auction. There were huge frozen tuna everywhere and Team USA seemed to be amazed
at the whole spectacle. Apparently, such a big group wasn't supposed to be there
and we were soon told to leave, but not until the Americans had had a memorable
experience. |
| 圭子と私は早朝4時起きでチームＵＳＡと落ち合い、築地の魚市場へと向かった！市場では魚を運ぶ電動カートに乗った人たちが忙しく行きかい、（少なくとも私には）怖〜い！と思える状況が何度かあった。巨大な冷凍マグロがあちこちにおいてあり、この光景はチームＵＳＡにとっては圧巻であった。どうも我々のような団体はセリの会場に入ってはいけなかったようで、すぐに追い出されたのだが、アメリカ人にとっては忘れられない思い出となったはずだ。 |
| Next,
we went to Ryogoku to see a Sumo practice at 9am. Uchiyama-san, a JFFF member
and Rusher's coach, was nice enough to arrange for Team USA to visit a Sumo stable.
Some of the Rusher players and parents joined us. It was awesome! I had never
seen a sumo match before, let alone a practice. I didn't realize that sometimes
the sumo wrestlers actually knock heads hard when they go at each other. After
their practice, the sumo wrestlers "wrestled" with the Japanese and
American kids, sometimes four kids at a time! |
| 次の目的地は両国。朝9時に相撲の朝稽古を見に行ったのだ。JFFFの会員でありラッシャーズのコーチである牛山さんのご好意で、チームＵＳＡは錦戸部屋を訪問する機会を得、ラッシャーズの選手たちも何名か集まった。朝稽古はもう本当にすごかった！私は相撲稽古は言うまでもなく、相撲の取り組みも見たことがなかった。力士たちが実際に「頭づき」をするとは知らなかった。練習の後、力士たちは、日本とアメリカの子供達と相撲をとってくれた。一度に4人の子供が一人の力士に挑んだりもした！ |

sumo, Keiko and I went with David and his players to the Tokyo Dome while I think
the parents went shopping. |

| I
managed to get a short nap in before we went to Passover dinner in Ohmori. Probably
100 people went to dinner at the chabad, which is a place for Jewish people to
gather in Tokyo. Keiko and I had a lot of fun learning about Jewish customs and
singing songs. |

| The
train ride back was an adventure. When we got on the Yamanote line in Shinagawa,
the train was packed. So packed that the only thing holding you up was the people
next to you who were jammed into your back, sides and stomach. I was so relieved
when we arrived in Ikebukuro and everyone made it off the train. Barely survived
day 5! |
| 帰りの電車は大変だった。品川から乗った山手線は満員で、あまりにも混んでいたので、後ろから、横から、前から押してくる人々に支えられて立っている状態だった。池袋に全員無事に着いたときには、本当にホッとした。日本遠征5日目、何とか生き延びた。 |

| We
left Tokyo by train this morning for tonight's sleepover at KEEP in Kiyosato,
Yamanashi Prefecture. About 30 Elementary and Junior High School players from
the Rikkyo Rushers are having a sleepover with the Team USA players - about 50
kids in all! They're staying at Shizen Gakko, the very nice dormitory facilities
at KEEP. |
| 朝、東京から電車で今晩の「お泊りイベント」が行なわれる山梨県清里のキープ協会へと向かった。立教小・中学校のラッシャーズの選手達約30名とチームUSAの選手とが「お泊りイベント」をすることになっており、子供だけで総勢50人となる！全員が自然学校というキープ協会の立派な寮施設に宿泊する。 |

so glad that David and Team USA get to stay at KEEP. KEEP is where we hold our
camp, SCOA Sports Camp. When I met David in Beijing, I told him about SCOA and
he said he wanted to come to our camp. Well, David, you're here! |

| The
Rushers greeted Team USA when they arrived and ate lunch together. After lunch,
Takako Aoki, one of SCOA's bilingual camp counselors, led the Rushers and Team
USA players in some "icebreaker" games to give the kids a chance to
introduce themselves to each other. Afterwards, everyone went to the Japan Football
Hall of Fame. KEEP then had a fun surprise - Everyone got a chance to milk a cow!
And one or two of the players got a little too close to the fence where the huge
emu was and got pecked on the head. |
| ラッシャーズがチームUSAを出迎え、昼食を一緒にとった。昼食後、SCOAのバイリンガル・キャンプ・カウンセラーの一人である青木宝子（たかこ）がラッシャーズとチームUSAをリードして、ice
breaker (緊張をときほぐすものという意味の)ゲームをしてくれた。互いに自己紹介をするのが目的だ。ゲームのあと全員で、ポールラッシュ記念センターへ行った。そしてその後にキープ協会は楽しいサプライズを用意してくれていた。全員に搾乳体験をさせてくれたのだ！選手たちの中には、大きなエミュー（ダチョウの仲間）がいるフェンスに近づきすぎて頭をつつかれた子もいた。 |
| While
everyone else was having fun, Mitch and Steven did the laundry for the group,
which, due to a dryer issue, turned into an all night affair. Mitch was still
folding laundry when I came in from the campfire! |

| But
the biggest surprise was it started snowing! I certainly had not anticipated snow
and wasn't prepared for it which meant that Team USA wasn't prepared for snow,
either. I knew it was going to be colder than Tokyo and told David and Mitch that
everyone should bring a sweatshirt along with their team's windbreakers. Oops! |

the neat thing was that a lot of the kids from Miami had never seen snow before
and were so excited. Luckily, it didn't snow a lot, but it was still cold. |

| The
KEEP staff put on a wonderful banquet with excellent food and decorations. The
mayor of Kiyosato made a special appearance and gave a nice speech. |

| The
campfire was a blast although very cold. David tried to start things off with
a feeble rendition of Old McDonald and one or two other classics before he found
his groove. Next thing you know everyone was clapping and singing while a couple
of Mo Steel players are lifting up one of the Rusher elementary school players
above their heads as part of Jewish wedding dance. A few of the Rushers made it
up into the air. |

| Word
of the day - Snow! It snowed during the games. A lot of the Mo Steel players I
talked to were loving it. In addition to having never seen snow before, a lot
of them had never played football in the snow before. It certainly was cold and
I'm glad I wasn't catching passes in the snow. A new team from Yamanashi came
to play Mo Steel. Apparently they hadn't played football as a team before. Their
first game was against Team USA - how memorable is that going to be! |

City of Kiyosato was nice enough to provide buses for us to go to Shiojiri so
we could catch the train to Nagoya. Judge and Taka Aoki went back to Tokyo so
it was just me as their guide. Luckily, Keiko joined us in Shiojiri to the relief
of the Mo Steel group. |

| We finally took
a shinkansen from Nagoya to Osaka. I say finally, because some of the players
would ask me everyday if we were taking the bullet train that day or if we were
on a bullet train (when we were on a local JR train!). Thanks to Judge's fine
organizational skills and hard work, everyone had a reserved green car seat on
the shinkansen. |
| ついに名古屋から大阪行きの新幹線に乗れた。「ついに」と言ったのには訳がある。毎日のように、選手の誰かが「今日、新幹線に乗るの？」とかJRの普通の電車に乗っているのに「今乗ってるこの電車、新幹線？」と聞いてきたからだ。伊藤さんの「ものごとをまとめていく手腕（！）」と尽力のおかげで、全員新幹線のグリーン車の予約席に座ることができた。 |
| Luckily
we had a couple of bilingual volunteers from Osaka, Nao and XXX, at the station
to greet us and to get us to the hotel which involved taking two short local train
rides. |

| Nao
found an izakaiya that could fit everyone at two or three tables. Nao, XXX and
Keiko helped everyone navigate the menu and everyone seemed to find something
they liked. I think the yakitori went over big. |
| ナオは、全員が丁度入れる居酒屋を探してきてくれた。ナオや圭子たちがメニューの説明をしてくれ、皆も食べたいものを見つけることができたようだ。焼き鳥が一番人気だったように思う。 |
| Some
of the players commented on how different the girl's fashions were in Osaka compared
to Tokyo and they couldn't help but notice the big orange hairstyles that a lot
of the Osaka girls had. Some of the group said that Osaka had more of a New York
feel than Tokyo. Or at least it had that feel around our hotel which included
a lot of hotels with neon signs and interesting names. |

| We
went to Kyoto by chartered bus. We went to XXZ and xxxx in the morning. I ate
lunch with the players at McDonald's. Nao just stood at the counter and helped
all the players order which made things go a lot faster. I even had my first Mega
Mac. Let me tell you, it's not as big as the picture makes it out to be. |
| バスをチャーターして京都へ行った。午前中は、竜安寺と平安神宮へ行った。私は選手たちとマックで昼食をとった。ナオがカウンターにずっと立って皆がオーダーするのを手伝ってくれたおかげで、ことが速く進んだ。私は初めてのメガマックにもトライした。しか〜し、実物は全然写真みたいに大きくな〜い！ |

ended up at Kiyomizu. The shrine was beautiful but the street lined with shops
leading up to it was a lot of fun. I think everyone spent two hours shopping for
souvenirs. I even finally found a wooden water gun for Kai (sumimasen, mizu teppo
ga arimasu ka?). Tracy and her daughter Hannah were thoughtful enough to buy Kai
a Thomas the train toy. |
| 最後に清水寺にいった。清水寺自体も素晴らしかったが、清水の舞台に続く通り一杯にならんだお店がそれはそれは楽しかった。みんなお土産を買うのに2時間位かけたんじゃないかと思う。私自身も、「スミマセン、ミズデッポー、アリマスカ？」と訊ね回り、やっと海へのお土産用の竹製水鉄砲を見つけることができた。トレーシーと娘のハナは海のために機関車トーマスのおもちゃを買ってくれたりした。 |

left with a couple of the parents Lara and Andy by cab to go to the Kyoto train
station. Keiko has to work in Tokyo tomorrow and Andy and Lara are going to dinner
with some friends who live in Kyoto. Keiko is going to meet us in Fukuoka the
day after tomorrow. |

| Great
day of football at Ritsumeikan University! The weather was beautiful, the field
was great and the people were awesome! Kamotani-san did a fantastic job of organizing
the event. I think there were over 60 Japanese players which was a great turn
out for a weekday. |
| 立命館大学での一日は、フットボール日和となった。天気がよく、グランドも素晴らしく、何よりイベントに関わってくれた人たちが最高だった。鴨谷さんは本当に素晴らしいイベントにしてくれた。60人以上の日本人が参加してくれたと思う。週日であったことを考えるとかなりの出席者だ。 |
| Since
Keiko had to go back to Tokyo for the day, I thought we were only going to have
Nao (Naoto Oshima is his full name) to rely on for interpreting. Luckily, Kamotani-san
had arranged for a bilingual volunteer, Chiharu Yamamoto, to come. Both Nao and
Chiharu did a great job of interpreting. |
| 圭子が東京へ戻ってしまっているので、通訳はナオだけになると思っていたが、鴨谷さん（日本フラッグフットボール連盟常任理事・本部副委員長）は、バイリンガル・ボランティとして千春を呼んでいてくれた。ナオも千春も立派な通訳をしてくれた。 |

Steel was very impressed with Ritsumeikan's field and I was too. It's kind of
like a sunken field and nice grass. The campus is nice and new, too. At the end
of the football games, David told me that a player on one of the junior high school
teams was the best athlete he had seen this year, including in the U.S. I talked
to a couple of parents and they said that it took over two hours to get to this
event, but they were happy they came. |

Steelも私も立命館のグランドには感心した。グランドは一段低いところにあって芝生だった。キャンパスも良かった。フットボールのイベントが終わったあと、Davidは今日参加してくれた中学生チームの一人が、アメリカも含めて今年出会ったプレーヤーの中で一番優秀だったと教えてくれた。見学に来てくれた親御さんたちと話したところ、このイベントに来るのに2時間も掛かったそうだが、みな来て良かったと言ってくれた。 |
| The
exchange dinner was held at Ritsumeikan's cafeteria and about 100 people attended.
Kamotani-san had a great game for the kids to play after dinner. It was "guess
who ate the bad tasting food." A couple of Japanese players and an American
player sat at a table and the rest of the players were the audience. Three identical
foods or beverages were place before each of them. One of the three was given
either food that had wasabi in it or a drink with vinegar. The audience had to
guess and vote on who ate the bad food. The guy who ate the wasabi or drank the
vinegar was supposed to pretend that the food or drink tasted ok. |
| 交流会ディナーは立命館の食堂で行われ、100人くらいが参加してくれた。ディナーのあと、鴨谷さんは子供達向けの楽しいゲームを用意してくれていた。「まずい食べ物を食べたのは誰だ？」っというゲームで、日本人選手二人とアメリカ人選手がテーブルに座り、残りは観客になる。そしてこの3人の前に、一見全く同じに見える食べ物や飲み物が出されるのだが、3人のうちの一人の食べ物にはわさびが入っていたり、飲み物にお酢が入っていたりするのだ。観客は、その3人が食べたり飲んだりするのを見て、誰がまずいものに当たってしまったかを当てなくてはいけないのだ。わさびが入ったものを食べても、お酢が入った飲み物を飲んでも、全く平気な顔をしていなくてはいけない、というわけだ。 |
| It
was hilarious. I forget who it was, but in the first round, one of the Mo Steel
players drank what was supposed to be apple juice but it had vinegar in it. As
soon as he tasted it he got up to spit it out, so his cover was blown. One Japanese
player ran to the bathroom to throw up after eating something with wasabi in it.
Ariel couldn't mask his disgust when he ate some wasabi-laced food. The only player
who fooled everyone was Gil who ate wasabi and was able to pretend everything
was ok. |
| これには爆笑させられた。誰だったか忘れしてしまったが、第一ラウンドでMo
Steelの選手がお酢の入ったりんごジュースを飲まされた。彼は、一口飲むや否や立ち上がって吹き出してしまい、すぐにバレてしまった。わさびが入った食べ物を食べさせられた日本人選手は、吐く為にトイレに駆け込んだ。Aliはわさび入りの食べ物を口にしても顔に出さずにいることができたが、皆をだますことができたのはGilだった。Gilはわさび入りを食べたのに、見事になんでもな〜い、という顔をしていた。 |

| Travel
and sightseeing day today. We left Osaka early in the morning for Fukuoka with
a stop in Hiroshima in between. Judge Ito, Sasada-san and I accompanied Team USA
on the shinkansen, although they were in the green car while we were in the cheap
seats, which were just fine. |
| 今日は1日移動と観光だった。朝早く大阪を出て、広島経由で福岡に向かった。伊藤さんと笹田さん、そして私はTeam
USAと一緒に新幹線に乗ったが、Team USAはグリーン車に乗り、私たちは安い普通の自由席に座った。それでも十分快適だったが。 |

arrived in Hiroshima around 11:30 am and the chartered bus was waiting for us.
I think we were all very happy that we didn't have to take any more crowded, local
trains. |

| We
went to Peace Park first and then to the Peace Museum. Steven Silvers was very
eloquent in explaining the history and context of what happened in Hiroshima as
we went along the tour in terms that the players could understand. I don't think
the players really knew or at least fully comprehended what had occurred in Hiroshima.
By the end of the tour they did and it seemed to have made an impact on them.

Silversは資料館を歩きながら、広島に原爆が落とされたその歴史的背景を子供たちにわかりやすく雄弁に語っていた。子供たちは恐らく広島で何が起きたのか、これまで良く知らなかった、いや少なくとも完全には理解していなかったのではないかと思う。広島での見学を終えた後は、皆理解を深め、そしてそれはかなりインパクトがあったようだ。 |
| We
arrived in Hakata around 4pm and were greeted by a group of players, coaches and
parents from the area, which was a very nice touch. It was great to see Jiro Fukuda
and Kenji Hirai who I hadn't seen since I met them in South Korea two summers
ago. We took a bus to Munakata-city. On the way I pushed for us to stop at a store
since I heard there were no stores near the hotel we were staying. The store turned
out to be kind of like a hardware/ home repair store. We were thinking more like
souvenirs and food. Oh well! |
| 4時頃に博多に到着すると、九州地区の選手、コーチ、親御さんたちが迎えにきてくれていた。嬉しい心遣いだった。2年前の夏に韓国で会った福田さんや平井さんに会えたのも嬉しかった。バスで宗像市へ向かった。その晩泊まるホテルの近くには何も店がないと聞いたので、途中買い物ができるように店に寄ってもらったのだが、行った店は、金物屋/ホームセンター系の店だった。おみやげとか食べ物を売っているお店を期待していたのだが。。。ま、仕方がないか。 |
| We
all loved the hotel, especially after the hotel in Osaka which wasn't quite up
to par. The Royal Genkai is a resort hotel and it felt like it. It seemed like
all the adults were making reservations for massages and I heard some of the kids
had massages! I had a shiatsu massage in my room. Keiko went to take a bath while
I was getting a shiatsu and by the time she got back, I was dead asleep. |
| ホテルは誰もが気に入った。今ひとつであった大阪のホテルの後だったので尚更だ。「ロイヤル玄海」はリゾートホテルで、本当にそんな感じがした。大人は全員マッサージの予約をしたみたいだし、子供の中にもマッサージをしてもらったのがいたそうだ。私は部屋で指圧をしてもらった。私が指圧をしてもらっている間、圭子は温泉に行ったのだが、圭子が帰ってきた頃には私はもう爆睡状態であった。 |
| After
explaining the detail rules involved in taking a bath in the onsen, David announced
to his team that maybe they would just skip the onsen. A few of the adults managed
to take advantage of the onsen, though. |
| 温泉に入るときのルールを詳細に説明した後、Davidは選手たちに「ま、温泉はやめておいた方がいいだろう」と言った。しかし大人たちの中には温泉を楽しんだ人も数人いた。 |

| We
had the football event in the morning instead of after the football games like
we did in Tokyo and Ritsumeikan. There was a lot of energy and everyone was genki.
David and his players liked having it in the morning because everyone was fresh
and not tired from playing football games. Next time we'll know better. |
| 今日は、東京や立命館でやったときとは逆に、試合の後ではなく午前中にフットボールクリニックを行った。みんなやる気満々、元気一杯であった。Davidも選手たちも、試合で疲れてしまう午後より、午前中にクリニックをする方がフレッシュな気分でできてよかった、と言っていた。 |
| The
football games were played on a dirt field and there were plenty of scrapes and
bruises today because there was some aggressive football being played. I was impressed
that Mo Steel players seemed fearless playing on dirt and didn't seem to change
their style of play. They were still diving for the ball or for a flag. There
were a lot of bandaged and taped players. Good thing there were so many doctors
around! |
| 試合は、土のグランドで行われ、かなり好戦的なプレーもあり、今日はかなり擦り傷、あざができてしまった選手がいた。Mo
Steelの選手は土のグランドだったのにもかかわらず、ボールやフラッグに大胆に突進していくプレーをし、大したもんだと思った。バンドエイドやテーピングをつけた選手が沢山いた。まわりに沢山医者がいてよかったというものだ。 |
| I
happened to be watching the last junior's game and it was a very close and exciting
game. They were playing the Muscles. They are an excellent team and finally at
the end scored a touchdown to beat the juniors by I think one point. After the
game, I was impressed with both sides. The Mo Steel players were gracious and
friendly and the Muscles players were low-key. I wouldn't have even known they
had won. They didn't make a big spectacle of their win - after all, it was the
only win by a Japanese team during the trip. It showed a lot of class, which I
think is a reflection of the coach. |
| 私は、ジュニアの最後の試合を見に行ったが、かなりの接戦でエキサイティングな試合となっていた。Team
USAの対戦相手は、マッスル長糸。マッスル長糸は一流のチームで、最後にタッチダウンをし、確か1点差でチームUSAのジュニアチームを負かしたと思う。試合後の両チームの態度は立派だった。Mo
Steelの選手たちは最後まで感じよく気さくだったし、マッスルの皆は勝っても控えめにしていたものだから、結果を聞いていなかったらマッスルが勝ったとわからなかっただろう。今回の遠征で日本のチームが勝ったのはこの試合だけだったのに、勝ったからといって大騒ぎすることもなく、それはとても礼儀正しい態度で、きっとコーチの姿勢の表れだろうと思った。 |
| The
exchange dinner was pretty impressive. It was held in one of the ball rooms of
the hotel and it was all decorated nicely. It's hard to believe this is the last
one and eight days has passed since the first one. Five exchange dinners during
the trip! Which meant of course, five speeches by David (and his speech writers!).

| 交流ディナーは、かなり豪華だった。会場はホテルの宴会場の一つで、それは素敵にセットアップされていた。これが最後の交流ディナーで、もう既に最初のディナーから8日が経ってしまったなんて信じられない。遠征中に開催された交流ディナーの数は5回だ！ということは、Davidにとって（も、スピーチ原稿作成者にとっても）5回スピーチがあったことになる。 |
| Afterwards,
Judge and I went to Kenji and Jiro's room to shoot the bull for a while. Afterwards,
Judge and I happened by the karoeke room and heard the unmistakable voices of
Americans. We stuck our heads in and saw that almost the entire Mo Steel entourage
had taken over the karoeke bar. Not only had they taken over, they were almost
all wearing yukatas (cotton kimonos) - it was quite a sight! Judge and I joined
them and Judge sang a few English and Japanese songs. Andy was hilarious- the
MC standup comic guy. It was a lot of fun and a good way to wrap up the day. |

ディナー終了後、伊藤さんと私は平井さんと福田さんの部屋へ行き、しばらくおしゃべりをした。それから、伊藤さんと私はカラオケバーの前を通りかかったのだが、どう考えてもアメリカ人であろう、という声が中から聞こえてきた。バーのドアを開け覗き込むと、Mo
Steelとその取巻きがほぼ全員いた。Mo Steel軍団がカラオケーバーを占拠してしまったようだ。占拠しただけでなく、ほぼ全員が浴衣を着ていて、その光景はなかなかのものだった。伊藤さんと私も仲間に加わり、伊藤さんは英語と日本語で数曲歌った。アンディはかなり面白いやつで、司会担当コメディアンという感じだった。それは楽しく、いい1日の締めくくりとなった。 |

| A
very long but fun day. Jiro arranged for Mo Steel to visit the Nissan factory.
It was amazing and surreal. We didn't see that many factory workers but we did
see hundreds and hundreds of robots making the cars! I had never seen anything
like it. Each robot has a specific task and does it over and over again. We saw
the whole process of manufacturing a car, from start to finish. I think everyone
was pretty fascinated by it. |

Steelのために日産工場見学を企画してくれていた。工場は超現実的な感じでとにかくすごかった。作業している人間はあまりいなくて、何百ものロボットが車を造っているのを見た！こんなすごいものはこれまで見た事がなかった。一つ一つのロボットが、一つの作業を担当し、それだけを繰り返し繰り返し行うのだ。車1台を作る過程を最初から最後まで見ることができた。皆、夢中になって見ていた。 |
| Jiro
arranged for us to have box lunches once we arrived at the Kokura train station.
The sandwiches were really good. We had an hour or so to kill, so Sasada-san and
I watched the luggage while everyone did last minute shopping. |

| The
shinkansen trip was uneventful. Mo Steel was in the green car and we were in the
non-reserve car, catching up on our sleep. We arrived at Tokyo station around
8pm and took the Yamanote line back to Ikebukuro. They stayed at the Crowne Plaza,
the same hotel they had stayed at previously. |
| 新幹線での移動は何事もなく終わった。Mo
Steelはグリーン車で、私たちは自由席で、睡眠不足を解消すべく寝た。夜8時頃に東京駅に到着し、山手線に乗り換え池袋に戻った。東京を離れる前に宿泊していた池袋メトロポリタンホテルにまたチェックインした。 |
| Hiroko
(Keiko's sister) was nice enough to make reservations for Mo Steel to have dinner
in one tatami room at an izakaiya by the Ikebukuro train station. Hiroko and Kai
met the players and parents at the train station to take them to the izakaiya.
The players hadn't seen Kai since the week before in Kawasaki and started chanting
his name in the middle of the station. Kai was so happy. They carried Kai on their
shoulders to the restaurant. |

Steelのメンバーたちと落ち合い、居酒屋まで連れて行ってくれた。子供たちが海に会ったのは、一週間前の川崎でのイベント以来だったので、駅のど真ん中で皆が「Kai!
Kai!」と大声で繰り返し呼んだ。海は大喜びだった。子供たちはレストランまで海を肩車で連れていってくれた。 |
| Uchiyama-san,
the other Rushers coach, joined us. Everyone was in a great mood and the Americans
seemed to like the food, although they weren't quite sure what some of the dishes
were. |
| ラッシャーズのもう一人のコーチである内山さんもディナーに参加してくれた。みんな最高の気分で、アメリカ人たちも食事が気に入ったようだ。。。彼らにとってはなんだかよくわからない料理もいくつかあったようではあったが。 |
| After
dinner, David had each player stand up and say what the favorite part of their
trip was. Several players said that the favorite part of their trip were the football
clinics and teaching the Japanese players football. One player said that the Japanese
players were so nice, enthusiastic and attentive which made it so much fun to
teach them. David said that this trip had changed his life and that he had an
incredible time in Japan and had such warm feelings for the Japanese. |
| 食事のあと、Davidが選手一人一人を立たせ、今回の遠征で一番よかったことについて発表させた。一番よかったのは、フットボールクリニックで、日本の選手たちにフットボールを教えられたのがよかった、と言った選手が数人いた。一人は、日本の選手たちが熱心に一生懸命聞いてくれたので、教えのがとても楽しかったと言った。Davidは、「今回の遠征は人生を一変させるほどの旅となった。日本では本当に素晴らしいときを過ごすことができ、そして今、日本人に対してとても暖かい気持ちを持っている」と語った。 |

and Mitch gave out funny "awards" at the end. Judge's was "most
likely to be Mo Steel's general manager in Japan. Mine was "the person most
in need of Japanese language lessons." That's for sure! Sasada-san's award
was "most likely to be retiring in Miami, Florida." A lot of the players
during the trip affectionately referred to him as the "teddy bear" because
he was so nice and friendly to them. |
| 最後にDavidとMitchは、「〜で賞」というおかしい賞を発表した。伊藤さんは、「Mo
Steelの日本支部ゼネラルマネージャーに最もなりそうで賞」を受賞し、私はといえば、「最も日本語の勉強をしなくちゃいけないで賞」をもらった。確かにそうだ。。。とは思う。笹田さんが受賞したのは、「十中八九フロリダのマイアミで隠居生活を送るで賞」だった。笹田さんはいつもやさしく親切にしてくれていたため、遠征中に選手たちの多くが親しみを込めて、笹田さんのことを「テディ・ベア」と呼んでいた。 |
| Keiko
said goodbye to everyone at the restaurant because she had to take Kai home. I
accompanied the group back to their hotel. Evan gave me a few t-shirts from some
of their tournaments which was really nice of him. Tracy remembered that she had
Kai's Thomas the Train toy and went back to her room to get it. She also gave
me a huge box of matzah. It was hard to say goodbye to everyone; we had been through
so much in the last two weeks. David told me that he wants to have a Japanese
team come to Miami next year for a goodwill tour. He also said he definitely wants
to come back to Japan. |

woke up today and it took me a minute to realize I didn't have to go meet Team
USA at their hotel! They departed for Miami today and today I had time to reflect
on Mo Steel's visit. |
| 朝、眼が覚めて少ししてから「そうか、今日はもうチームUSAのホテルに行かなくていいのか！」ということに気付いた。チームUSAは今日のフライトでマイアミへと飛び立つ。久しぶりにゆっくりできる朝、Mo
Steelの訪日を振り返ってみる。 |
| It was just
two weeks ago that they arrived in Japan, 37 Americans, including 14 adults and
23 students. In two weeks, they went to places in Japan and saw things that even
some Japanese on the trip hadn't been to or seen before, like a sumo practice
or the Peace Museum in Hiroshima. Over 600 Japanese flag football players, parents
and coaches attended events in Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yamanashi and Kyushu, way more
than we had anticipated. The American players put on five football clinics, played
nearly 40 football games against Japanese teams and shared numerous meals with
their Japanese counterparts and even had a sleepover with a Japanese team. They
experienced more of Japan in two weeks than I could have imagined, including Kamakura,
the crowded trains of Tokyo, riding the shinkansen, KEEP in beautiful Kiyosato,
Kyoto and Fukuoka. |
| 彼らが日本へ来たのはほんの2週間前のことだった。大人14人、学生23人の総勢37人。たったの2週間で、相撲部屋での朝稽古、広島の平和記念資料館など、同行した日本人ですら見たことがないものを見、訪ねたことがないところを訪ねた。東京、川崎、山梨、大阪、九州で行われたフットボールイベントには、600人以上の日本人フラッグフットボール選手、親御さんやコーチたちが参加してくれた。予想を遥かに上回る数字となった。アメリカ人選手たちは、フットボールクリニックを5回開催し、日本人チームと40回以上対戦し、日本人のフットボール仲間と何度も食事を共にし、そして｢お泊り会｣まで経験した。鎌倉観光、東京の満員電車、新幹線、美しい清里のキープ協会、京都、福岡。。。私の想像を遥かに超える形で、たった2週間で様々な日本を「体験」した。 |
| Last
night, David Fried said that his trip to Japan has changed his life for the better
and has changed the way he will approach coaching. He said the Japanese people
he met were so warm and friendly and the Japanese players were so eager to learn
football. |

| Team
USA's goodwill tour couldn't have been possible without the volunteers and organizations
who gave their time, effort and resources to make this tour a success. I counted
over 100 individuals who volunteered their time during the tour, including JFFF
members in Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka. The twenty volunteer bilingual volunteers
who helped facilitate the communication between the Japanese players and American
players were a lifesaver. The City of Kawasaki let us use a field at their festival,
Senshu University and Ritsumeikan University let us use their fields for events
and Munakata-City let us use Munakata-Yurix Park in Fukuoka. |
| 今回のチームUSAの親善遠征は、ボランティアや関係組織の方々が、なんとかこのイベントを成功裡に終わらせようと自分の時間を奉仕し、尽力してくれなければ実行できなかったことだ。東京、大阪、福岡の日本フラッグフットボール連盟の人々をはじめ、100人以上がボランティアとして活躍してくれた。日本人選手とアメリカ人選手との間の意思疎通円滑化に勤めてくれた20名のバイリンガルボランティアは、本当に「救いの主」だった。川崎市は、丸子花見市の開催会場を貸してくださり、専修大学も立命館大学もフットボールイベントのためにグラウンドを貸してくれた。福岡の宗像市は、宗像ユリックスを提供してくれた。 |
| The
U.S. Embassy provided support (koen) as well as KEEP and the Japan American Football
Association. NFL Japan provided support (kyouroku) along with SCOA (Sports Camp
of America). |

| The
volunteers and organizations, along with the hundreds that participated in the
events, made it possible for kids from Japan and America to get to know each other
on an informal basis through playing flag football and many new friendships were
made. By any measure, the events were a huge success, and I'm glad I was a part
of it and I'm grateful that I was able to make many new American and Japanese
friends over the last two weeks. And now I'm going to take the rest of the day
off! |
| こうしたボランティアや様々な組織、そしてイベントに参加してくれた何百人もの人々のおかげで、日米の子供たちが、形式ばらない自然な形で、フットボールを通じて相互理解を深めることができ、その結果、数多くの新たな友情が芽生えた。どうみても今回のイベントは大成功としか言いようがなく、私自身その一部となれたことを嬉しく思う。そして、この2週間で沢山のアメリカ人と日本人と友達になれたことに感謝する。。。さ、今日は1日もうゆっくりするぞ〜！ |
